In today's first reading from 1 Corinthians 4, St. Paul talks about judgment. In the Gospel reading from Luke 5, Jesus talks about putting away the old and embracing the new. Change can be hard!
St. Paul writes, "It does not concern me in the least that I be judged by you or any human tribunal...the one who judges me is the Lord. Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed time, until the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will manifest the motives of our hearts..."
Judgment is a two-edged sword. We're often quick to judge others, but we insist no one judge us. (Social media is great for this. Folks make snap judgments about people or things about which they know little or nothing.) And we must be prudent when judging ourselves. We can sometimes think that bad actions are acceptable because our motives are pure as the driven snow. But are they? As St. Paul alludes, the Lord will judge all.
Father, help us to be slow to judge - others and ourselves. We await the judgment of the just Judge, Christ Jesus the Lord. Amen.
