More of the unfolding of the Christmas story today. In the first reading from Jeremiah 23, we read, “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up a righteous shoot to David; As king he shall reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land.”
Today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 1 really focuses on Joseph. Interesting fact: Not a word of Joseph’s is recorded in the Scriptures. He never says a thing. But his actions speak much louder than any words ever could. An angel comes to him in a dream and tells him to “take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.” Now, Joseph could have written this dream off to a bad pizza or something. But he didn’t. He knew that he had heard from the Lord’s messenger. And he obeyed.
Oh, that we would all have the faith and obedience of blessed St. Joseph! He is a model for all Christians, and most especially dads. No matter how crazy circumstances seemed, Joseph believed God and did His will. May we always follow his example in our lives.
Father, thank you for the example of St. Joseph. Teach us to hear and obey you as he did. Amen.
