The Gospel reading for Year B (remember, your church may use the readings for Year A if you have RCIA) is from John 3. It contains perhaps the most well known verse in all of Scripture. John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” Ah, yes, John 3:16. Remember the guy who always wore a big rainbow wig and held up a sign with John 3:16 on TV?
This has been called the Gospel in a sentence. It tells us much. 1) There is a God. 2) He loves us. 3) He has a Son, an only Son. 4) He sent his Son into the world. 5) His Son came into the world for a purpose. 6) That purpose is that we might have eternal life. I’m sure there are a lot more than six things we can get from this verse but for the sake of brevity, we’ll keep it there.
You know, we don’t need to wear rainbow wigs or signs or sandwich boards that have this verse on it to evangelize. What we need to do is live it. To believe in God, in his Son and in the fact that He came to offer us eternal life. For when we live out that message, it will be a much more powerful sign than any rainbow wig or piece of cardboard could ever be.
Father, we thank you for sending your Son for us. Help us to believe and live out our belief every moment of every day. Amen.
