Jailbird Evangelists

Posted on

In today's first reading from Acts 5, we see one of numerous stories of jailbreaks in the Book of Acts. The Gospel reading today begins with perhaps the most recognized passage of Scripture, John 3:16.

Jesus' Apostles were not in the good graces of the Jewish leaders. Today we see that the High Priest and his cronies had the Apostles thrown into prison. "But during the night, the angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said, 'Go and take your place in the temple area, and tell the people everything about this life.'"

The Apostles were jailbirds. You're probably well aware that folks who have done time in prison have a stigma about them. You would probably tread very carefully around an ex-con. I suspect many looked at the Apostles in that same way. These guys were reprobates. They were also chosen to bring the message of Christ to all. Maybe a lesson for us is to be careful about judging a book by its cover, or a person just by their past.

Father, give us the grace to recognize people you send into our lives and hear your message, despite whatever baggage they may be carrying. Amen.

    Hi Gus,
I wanted to email you regarding asking all of your listeners to say the Rosary every day for our President, his family and our country. There is such hate from the left and the liberal media, I am worried something will happen to the President and our country.
President Andrew Jackson had a convent of Nuns praying for him and he won the battle and save the country. I believe we are in a similar situation today.
If Catholics across the country come together to pray everyday to support the President and our country, maybe things will change.
Also in the 12th century St. Dominic, Founder of the Rosary, was trying to win back the hearts and minds of those who had been swept by the Albigensian heresy, when the Blessed Mother entrusted the Rosary to him. With the spiritual sword of the rosary in his hand St. Dominic’s new style of preaching became effective against the Albigensian’s and he won many back to the fullness of Christian teaching in the Catholic Church. The Blessed Mother told him to use the Rosary as a sword against his enemies. With over whelming odds, St. Dominic won back the followers.

So if everyone asked the Blessed Mother to use each Rosary as a sword for our President for good against his enemies maybe our country can come together to stop the hate and think about our country. Sorry this is long, but I have been saying the Rosary everyday for our President and ask the Blessed Mother to use it as a sword for good against evil. Eileen Roth
