In today's first reading from 2 Kings 25, we see one of the saddest moments in the history of God's chosen people - the beginning of the Babylonian exile.
For nearly two years the Chaldean army had surrounded and besieged Jerusalem. Finally they broke through the walls. The king fled, but was captured, and his sons were slain before his eyes. The city was burned and all the people (save for a few) were led into exile.
It's probably very difficult for us to even imagine it. Being forced to abandon everything you'd ever known and led to a foreign land. I truly can't begin to imagine the sadness the people must have experienced. I'm sure for many, all hope was lost. But we know the rest of the story, that God would set things right in time. Perhaps our lesson is that even at our lowest point, we must remember that God has a plan, and it will all work out in his time.
Father, help us to remember that no matter how bad things get, you will be victorious in the end, and that we share in that victory through Christ our Lord. Amen.
