In the Gospel reading today from Luke 17, the Apostles say to Jesus, “Increase our faith.” Interesting, isn’t it? I mean, here is a group of guys who have given up everything, family businesses, jobs, everything, to follow Jesus. And yet they still feel that they need an increase in faith.
Jesus tells them, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” Now we know the reason Jesus chose the mustard seed is because it was the smallest of seeds. What does this speak to you?
To me, it tells me that my faith must be microscopic. I like to think that I have much faith. And yet there are so many places that I struggle. But I am comforted in knowing that even the Apostles felt this way. And so my prayer today, for me and for you, echoes theirs.
Father, increase our faith. Amen.
