If God is For Us...

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from Luke 13, Jesus laments over Jerusalem. He says, "Behold, your house will be abandoned."

If you've ever been to a funeral, you may have heard part of today's first reading from Romans 8. St. Paul asks the question, "What will separate us from the love of Christ?" He then goes on to give a list of things, none of which will separate us from the love of Christ. So the question is somewhat a rhetorical question. Today's reading starts with another seemingly rhetorical question.

If God is for us, who can be against us? On the surface, I would answer lots of folks. Sometimes doesn't it seem much of the world is against us? St. Paul gives let us know that, while many may seem to come against us, none will be victorious. "No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us." So the answer to St. Paul's question? No one or nothing of any consequence.

Father, we thank you for overwhelming victory over all things, including death, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Romans text was a favorite. I remember George W Bush using it after 9-11.
