Honoring Mary

Posted on

There are two options for a first reading today – from Song of Songs and Zephaniah. Both are beautiful and deserving of your meditation. In the Gospel reading from Luke 1, we see the scene of Elizabeth welcoming Mary into her home.

First, Elizabeth was “filled with the Holy Spirit” when she uttered words that we repeat each time we say the Hail, Mary prayer. “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Did you realize that most of the Hail, Mary is simply quoting Scripture? Elizabeth continues, “And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” Elizabeth was so honored by Mary’s presence.

As Catholics, we have that same attitude of Elizabeth. We honor Mary, and are honored by her presence. The mother of the Lord is our mother as well. Have you ever felt honored to be in the presence of a dignitary or celebrity? How much more so should we feel about Jesus’ mother – our Mother?

Father, we honor Mary as Jesus honors His mother, as Elizabeth honored her. May we always live her example of faith. Amen.
