In our first reading today from Daniel 7, the prophet is privileged to get a vision of heaven. He sees “One like a son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven.” It was Jesus. The One whose “kingship shall not be destroyed.
In today’s Gospel reading from Luke 21, Jesus says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” And so it has been. Seasons come and go. Rulers and kingdoms are here today, gone tomorrow. But for 2000 years now, one thing has remained constant. The words of Jesus. Untold billions of people have been transformed by his words. But it is not untold billions that Jesus has his eye on. It is just one person. You.
Do Jesus’ words live in you? Are they written on your heart? If not, why not? On this day of crass commercialism in the U.S. (Black Friday), let us take a few moments to allow Jesus’ words to penetrate our hearts. Not just for a moment, but forever. Let us take Jesus’ words and make sure that they live on in us, that they will never pass away.
Father, may the words of Christ Jesus touch our hearts today and every day. As they live on for eternity, may they live on in our hearts until you gather us up as your own. Amen.
