Heavenly Heroes

Today the Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, the Archangels. Saint Michael is God’s great warrior angel, the Prince of the heavenly hosts. We see Michael doing battle with the dragon in today’s first reading from Revelation 12. Manly stuff, that! Gabriel is God’s messenger. In Luke 1, we see Gabriel coming to the Blessed Virgin Mary to announce that she has been chosen to bear the Son of God. And Raphael’s story is found in the book of Tobit.

I dare say that often times we forget to call on the power of these mighty intercessors and warriors. Look at it this way…if Michael can kick Satan’s butt one on one, then my puny little request to get me away from the evil one ought to be a piece of cake! So, make the mistake no more! Call on the archangels in your time of distress, and know that they will be by your side to offer prayers and assistance in a flash! I figure to end today’s reflection, we can’t do better than calling on our warrior leader.

St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in the battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
