Hearing and Acting

Posted on

We get more wisdom of the ages today from Proverbs 21, like this: “He who shuts his ear to the cry of the poor will himself also call and not be heard.”

In our Gospel reading from Luke 8, Jesus is told that “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you.” His reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.” Notice He didn’t say “Everyone is my mother and my brothers.”

Hearing the word of God is not enough. This reminds me of folks who spend 56.3 minutes a week in church, but that’s it. They don’t truly “practice” their faith. Now, going to church is a very good thing. We must do that. But if we’re not taking what we hear and ACTING on it, then we’re falling short. In fact, we’re not even part of Jesus’ family.

Father, help us to be not just church-goers, but Jesus’ family, by acting on His words. Amen.
