We’ve all heard the old axiom, actions speak louder than words. In our first reading today from James 1, St. James reaffirms this. “Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves.” The word of God must not go in one ear and out the other. We have to put God’s word into action in our lives each day.
In the Gospel reading today from Mark 8, we see an interesting healing take place. Jesus lays hands on a blind man and asks, “Do you see anything?” The blind man sees, but only vague shapes. So Jesus lays hands on him a second time. This time, the man sees clearly. Did Jesus need a mulligan? Of course not.
The blind man is healed in stages. Perhaps his faith was somewhat lacking. Perhaps he was just not ready to receive his sight all at once. Whatever the case, this is a great reminder for us that sometimes God heals us in stages. Perhaps we’re not ready for a complete healing. God’s plan and God’s timing are perfect. Sometimes we may receive only a partial healing. When that’s the case, give it time. God will bring about full healing in his good time.
Father, we thank you for healing us, whether completely or in stages. May we always give you thanks for however you decide to heal us. Amen.
