He is Obnoxious

Posted on

The first reading today from Wisdom 2 (Old Testament) fits Jesus to a tee. It begins with this: The wicked said among themselves, thinking not aright, "Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us."

It goes on. "He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD...his life is not like that of others, and different are his ways. He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure."

While this is a perfect descriptor of Jesus, could it not be of Christians today? I think many today feel the same way as the people in this reading. When we stand up for life, for Christian values, we are obnoxious to them. They feel about us much the same as the people in this reading. But just as Christ stood up for truth because of His great love, so must we. Even though we may be treated much the same.

Father, increase our love, our strength, our confidence in you. Even though we may be viewed as obnoxious, may we always stand for truth. Amen.
