In today's Gospel reading from John 14, Philip says to Jesus, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” Jesus seems to be a bit perturbed with him, mostly because of his lack of understanding that Jesus and the Father are one. He explains this to Philip, then says, “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do…If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.” Wow!
Can you imagine doing greater works than Jesus? He cured the sick, fed the multitudes, raised people from the dead. You won’t find that stuff on my resume. But perhaps we truly have done greater works than those. Maybe we just don’t know about them yet. When we limit ourselves like this, we limit God. Who’s to say that your prayers haven’t saved someone’s life? Or that something that you thought was so small and inconsequential was actually a mighty work in the sight of God? Friend, I think you are doing MIGHTY things! Keep it up!
Father, help us to stop putting limits on you. We ask that you will allow us to continue to do mighty works for the Kingdom, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
