Great Calm

Posted on

In today’s Gospel reading from Mark 4, Jesus and His disciples take a little cruise on the Sea of Galilee. While they’re out, Jesus is taking a nap. (I suspect Jesus didn’t sleep too much in the first place.) Suddenly a violent squall comes upon the sea. The terrified disciples wake Jesus up, assuming He will do something to save them. They say, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

Jesus wakes up and says to the wind and the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The Scripture then tells us that, “The wind ceased and there was great calm.” Of course, the disciples were amazed. Who wouldn’t be?

There was great calm. Not only can Jesus have that effect on the weather, He can also have the same effect on us. It can be very difficult to find calm in the midst of the great storms in our lives, can’t it? When we listen to Jesus, just as the wind and waves did that evening, we, too, can experience great calm. Listen. Obey. Trust. Be calm.

Father, give us the grace to listen to Jesus during those stormy times in our lives. May we experience His great calming effect in our lives. Amen.
