Good and Evil

Posted on

Today's Gospel reading from Matthew 8 is the story of Jesus casting demons out of two men and into a herd of swine. The people of the town were none too pleased.

In today's first reading from Amos 5, we read this: "Seek good and not evil, that you may live; Then truly will the LORD, the God of hosts, be with you as you claim! Hate evil and love good..."

We often think of good and evil as two ends of a spectrum. For many, they are black and white. And we would never think that we "seek" evil. But aren't there times where the two may not be so far from each other? I know there are times where the two are conflated or inversed. Like those who think abortion (a grave evil) is actually good. Let's ask for God's wisdom to know the difference, and always seek good.

Father, may we never seek evil, but always seek good by doing your will. Amen.
