Paul was seen by many as a rabble-rouser. In today’s first reading from Acts, he creates a stir between the Pharisees and the Sadducees over the resurrection of the body. Things get so heated that troops have to come in and rescue Paul before he gets torn to shreds. Then the Lord tells Paul that he “must bear witness in Rome.”
In the Gospel reading from John 17, we hear more of the prayer of Jesus to the Father. It is a beautiful and heartfelt prayer. Jesus says, “Father, they are your gift to me” and “that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them.” In other words, Jesus prayed that the love of the Father would be in His disciples.
God’s love is in us. It is in us because God loves us. The question then becomes whether God’s love that is in us is coming out of us. Are we showing the love of God to others? I believe that the answer lies in how much we reciprocate God’s love for us. In other words, the more we love God, the more we are devoted to Him, the more we will love all of His children.
Father, thank you for loving us. May the love that you show us be the love that we show others. Amen.
