God’s Generosity

Posted on

Isnt’ God good? When you think about it, God is so much more merciful than we deserve. We get a great sense of this in today’s first reading from Daniel 9. Listen to the first few words of each sentence in today’s passage: “You who keep your merciful covenant…We have sinned…We have not obeyed…We are shamefaced…” Yet even still, we read, “But yours, O Lord, our God, are compassion and forgiveness!” Yes, God is good!

In our Gospel reading from Luke 6, the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus says, “Stop judging…stop condemning…forgive…” He then goes on to talk about the principle of sowing and reaping. “Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap.” Give. Sounds very much like one of our pillars of Lent, no? Almsgiving.

God can never be outdone in generosity. Jesus expects us to be generous people. And it’s not as though, as we become more generous, God becomes more generous. God already showers us with blessings constantly. But, as we become more generous, we begin to see and understand more God’s generosity. And our generosity rubs off to become an example for others, who may become more generous as well. And it all comes back around, completing the circle. Cool how God works that out, isn’t it?

Father, you are so good to us. Help us to see your goodness, and share that goodness generously with others. Amen.
