In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 11, Jesus says, “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones.”
Jesus spoke on numerous occasions about being childlike in our relationship with God. This is really a slightly different way of saying that. Why is it that the wise and the learned have a hard time “getting” the message of God?
I believe that true wisdom comes from God. The truly wise are wise in the ways of God. So the wise that Jesus refers to here are the ones who are wise in the ways of the world. They may even eschew the notion of God’s wisdom. And the learned? I believe that we must all be learned – but learned in the things of heaven. Sometimes the learned in the world can feel that they are so smart that God is but a concept used by the religious to control the weak. One day they will learn. Let’s pray that we never fall into those traps.
Father, keep us simple. May we always be eager to gain wisdom from you, and learn more of your ways, that we may live. Amen.
