God Pays Attention

Posted on

Why are we here? I mean, why do we exist? Is it to accumulate stuff? To, as Spock would say, live long and prosper? Perhaps it is only to serve our fellow man. Even though that is a noble thing, it is not the right answer. What is? St. Paul tells us in today’s first reading from Ephesians 1: “That we might exist for the praise of his glory, we who first hoped in Christ.” You see, we exist to praise God! Praise God!!

In the Gospel reading today from Luke 12, Jesus warns His disciples to “Beware of the leaven – that is, the hypocrisy – of the Pharisees.” He then goes on to talk about how even tiny sparrows do not escape God’s notice. He then says to the people, “Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.”

Have you ever felt as if no one even knows you exist? Sometimes we may feel so inconsequential that even God doesn’t notice us. Now, I’m sure you know that this is never the case. Even when you feel the lowest, the smallest, the puniest, God notices you. And not only notices you, but dotes on you! You are the apple of His eye! I say that you know this. But you know what? There are an awful lot of people that don’t know this. In my book Magnetic Christianity, I say that one of the deepest desires of human beings is for someone to pay attention to them. Pay attention to someone today, and let them know that God is paying attention to them, too!

Father, even when it seems as though no one on the planet even knows that we’re alive, You notice us. Show us an opportunity today to let someone know that you are paying attention to them. Amen.
