Give Me Strength!

Posted on

Today is the final day of the Church year. Tomorrow we begin a new year with the First Sunday of Advent.

Today’s Gospel reading from Luke 21 sounds very Advent-ish. Jesus warns His disciples not to fall asleep at the wheel. He says, “Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man.”

This reminds me of my mom. She had five kids in five years and another three years after the fifth. You can imagine how maddening life must have gotten with six children running around. She would often look heavenward and yell, “Give me strength!” Little did I know at the time just how biblical her prayer was! Exactly what Jesus told us to do. It’s interesting how God always delivered on that prayer with just enough strength to get by. He’ll do the same for you!

Father, give us strength! Amen.
