Give Me a Sign!

Posted on

Back in 1971, a group called The Five Man Electrical Band released a song called "Signs." Most of us boomers recall the hook.

"Sign, Sign, everywhere a sign, blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind. Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"

In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 12, some of the scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for a sign. He tells them that no sign will be given them except the sign of Jonah. You see, Jesus was (and is) the sign. But many wouldn't accept it. Have you ever been in a position where you asked for a sign? You felt as though you needed divine direction, so you cried out, "Lord, give me a sign!" But the sign is right there. It is Christ, and the Church that He left to the world. Perhaps God will give you an individual sign. But the world already has their sign.

Father, may we block out all the nonsense and clearly see our sign - your Son, Christ Jesus. Amen.
