In today's Gospel reading from Luke 9, Jesus encounters three people who wish to follow Him. He makes clear to all three the difficulties they will encounter in doing that.
The second and third say to Jesus, in essence, "I will follow you, but..." They then bring up situations regarding family matters. Read what Jesus says to each of them. He lets them know that following Him must come before everything else in our lives.
I think we all have that "but" in our lives, don't we. We want to follow Jesus unreservedly, but there's always something that gets in the way. Do we have the fortitude and courage to get past the "but"? I hope so. Because following Jesus is the only way to be guided to eternal life.
Father, help us to get past the "but" in our lives, that we may follow Jesus wherever He leads. Amen.
