Fruit Through Perseverance

Posted on

In today's Gospel reading from Luke 8, Jesus tells, and then explains, the parable of the sower.

He starts His explanation with this: "The seed is the word of God." And He ends with this: "But as for the seed that fell on rich soil, they are the ones who, when they have heard the word, embrace it with a generous and good heart, and bear fruit through perseverance."

Jesus spoke often of the need for perseverance. Note that in the other three examples of where the seed fell, there was no perseverance. The seed may have sprouted, but only for a short time. The fruit comes only through time, just as with fruit bearing trees. For some trees, it takes many years to bear good fruit. So it is with us.

Father, we pray for the gift of perseverance. Help us to stay the course, even through all the hardships and trials of life. Amen.
