False Prophets

Posted on

Today we have a very interesting first reading from 2 Kings. The book of the law had been lost, and was found. The king summoned all the people and the book of the law was read aloud to them all. The king then renews the covenant with the LORD.

In the Gospel reading today from Matthew 7, Jesus warns, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but underneath are ravenous wolves. By their fruits you will know them.” Jesus knew quite well that people would come along and try to lead others away from God, while pretending to be speaking in the name of God. Thus has it been for throughout the history of Christianity.

It would be easy enough to point fingers even today to some that I would consider false prophets. Especially in our culture of death, there are many that are all too happy to lead the faithful astray. They distort the truth and invariably put their own souls, and the souls of others, in jeopardy. They must be exposed for what they are – wolves in sheep’s clothing – and resisted mightily.

Father, give us the vision to see the wolves in sheep’s clothing, and the courage to resist them always. Amen.
