Today’s Gospel reading from Mark 6 is the story of the beheading of John the Baptist. Sad and tragic, yes, but a great story for us about standing up for truth no matter the consequences.
There’s a very interesting line in today’s first reading from Hebrews 13. “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.” This implies that sometimes angels may enter our lives unbeknownst to us. Do you think that may have ever happened to you?
We sometimes refer to human beings as angels. When someone does us a kindness or perhaps even saves us from a dire situation, we call them an angel. Perhaps that is the context that the sacred author is using. Or perhaps not. God can certainly send real angels to earth. Scripture has many stories about that sort of thing. We must always be open to the possibility of an angel in our midst.
Father, may we always exercise hospitality – to angels and people alike. Amen.
