More of the intriguing story of David today in our first reading from 2 Samuel 12. The prophet Nathan comes to David and tells him a story, one which enrages David. Nathan tells him that he (David) is the bad guy in the story. And David comes clean. “I have sinned against the Lord.” Please take the time to read it, it is a fascinating story.
In our Gospel reading from Mark 4, the disciples are in a boat with Jesus, who is sleeping. Suddenly, a big storm comes up and the boat is getting tossed around. The disciples, afraid for their lives, wake Jesus up and say, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Jesus then tells the wind and the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The disciples are “filled with great awe.” As they should be.
Have you ever asked Jesus that question? “Jesus, don’t you care? Don’t you care that my children aren’t practicing the faith? Don’t you care that my spouse wants a divorce? Don’t you care that…(fill in the blank)?” When it comes right down to it, we know what the answer is. Of course He cares. Much like the disciples in the boat, it is our own insecurities that cause us such angst. Oh, Jesus cares. He cares more than you’ll ever know.
Father, forgive us for those times when we doubt about your care for us. Help us to trust fully in Your Son, Christ Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
