Once again, another theme runs through the readings for today. In the first reading from Isaiah 29, we read this…”And out of the gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see.” Be sure to read the rest of the reading, too. It is most beautiful! Our Gospel passage is from Matthew 9. Not one, but two blind men approached Jesus and cry out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” And Jesus gives them their sight.
Before Jesus gives them their sight, He asks them a question. Now, one might expect that that question would be something along the lines of, “What do you want me to do for you?” But in this instance, it is not. Jesus asks them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” Interesting question, huh? I mean, if they didn’t believe that Jesus could restore their sight, then why would they have gone to Him in the first place. Ah, but not so fast. Perhaps they were just hedging their bets. You know, the old “what have I got to lose” attitude. And, in reality, maybe that’s better than nothing.
But it’s not enough for Jesus. He has high expectations of us when it comes to faith. Look at the response of the two blind men. They didn’t say, “Well, uh, sure, Lord…I suppose you can do this.” No! They replied, “Yes, Lord.” No hesitation. No hedging bets. No maybe, possibly, perhaps. Just, “Yes!” Search your heart today for your answer to that question. Do you believe, REALLY BELIEVE that Jesus can heal you, can take care of your every need?
Father, we believe. Help our unbelief. Amen.
