In the Gospel reading today from Luke 10, Jesus pronounces “woes” on the towns of Chorazin and Bethsaida. He also has not nice things to tell Capernaum, his adopted home town. Why? Because they had seen many mighty deeds done in their midst, yet refused to repent.
In the first reading today from Baruch 1, the exiles decide that it is time to come clean. Listen to some of the words in their prayer to God. “We have neither heeded the voice of the Lord, our God, nor followed the precepts which the Lord set before us…we have been disobedient to the Lord, our God…each one of us went off after the devices of his own wicked heart, served other gods, and did evil in the sight of the Lord, our God.”
The first step to healing is admitting that we have done something wrong. This is often also the hardest step for us to take. So many things keep us from admitting our guilt. Pride is often the biggest factor. But once we come clean, once we admit that we have done wrong in the sight of God, then we can really begin the healing process. It is rarely easy and almost always painful. But in the end, being made whole is worth it all. So…have you come clean?
Father, we come to you shamefaced, admitting our guilt. We have sinned against you and done what is evil in your sight. Forgive us, Lord, and heal us. Amen.
