In the first reading today, we begin reading St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. This will be a very rich couple of weeks as we go through the book of Ephesians. In the Gospel reading today, we hear more woes coming from Jesus to the Pharisees and scholars of the law. He ticks them off again, to the point where they begin plotting against him.
Did you know that God is pro-choice? (OK, before you think I’ve gone off the deep end and you’re ready to shoot off an email or a nasty comment, stick with me here!) That’s right. God chooses His children. Here’s how St. Paul puts it in our first reading today: “(God) chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ.” So you see…God made a choice, and he chose you!
Doesn’t it feel great to be chosen? To be wanted? That is exactly what you are. But we can’t leave the thought there. There’s more. You have been chosen “to be holy and without blemish before him.” Now, that sounds like a tall order, no? And it is. In fact, it is WAYYY too tall for us on our own. Impossible, even. But because God has chosen you, he will give you all the graces necessary to fulfill this call.
Father, we thank you for choosing us. With your love and grace, may we be holy and without blemish before you. Amen.
