In today's Gospel reading from Matthew 21, Jesus tells a story about a man who had two sons. He asked both to go work in the vineyard. The first said, "I will not," but afterwards changed his mind and went. The second son said, "Yes, sir," but did not go.
Jesus asked the chief priests and elders which of the two did the father's will. They correctly responded, "The first."
The key here is that the first son changed his mind. Did you know that changing someone's mind (including our own) is one of the hardest things to do? We get set in our ways or are convinced that we are right and refuse to budge. Even when confronted with evidence to the contrary, we stand our ground. Sadly, we can do this with God as well. We can be so stubborn that we refuse to let even God change our minds. Let's pray that when a change of mind is needed, we will be humble enough to do it.
Father, forgive us for being so close-minded. Help us to change our minds; to see the way of righteousness and go that way. Amen.
