If you have children (especially teenagers), you’ll relate to today’s reflection. More in a moment. In the Gospel reading from Mark 2, we read the story of a paralytic lowered into the house in which Jesus was teaching through the roof by his friends. Jesus forgives his sins and heals him.
In today’s first reading from 1 Samuel 8, the Israelites tell Samuel that they want a king. Everyone else had a king, so they wanted one, too. Samuel explains to them why this is a bad idea. He goes into detail about what a king would do, saying to them, “You yourselves will become his slaves.” No matter. Over time, the warning of Samuel would become a prophesy fulfilled.
This story is a classic example of Be Careful What You Wish For. If you have kids, you’ve probably experienced this same thing; probably did it yourself! We often want what others have, even if it’s not good for us. In this case, God granted the desire of his petulant children. Perhaps this is why Jesus taught us to pray for God’s will, not ours.
Father, for desiring things that others have out of jealousy. May we always desire only your will. Amen.
