Our Gospel reading today is from Mark 10. It is about Jesus’ encounter with the rich young man. Today we hear those famous words of Jesus, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven.” Now, a camel could never pass through the eye of a needle. So does this mean it is impossible for someone who has a lot of money and possessions to get to heaven? We must read on to get the full context and the answer.
“For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God.” Ah…there’s the catch. A human on their own cannot enter the Kingdom. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. But with the help of God, anyone may enter! As far as the riches part goes, if God is guiding one with great riches, then those riches will be used as a tool to help further the Kingdom of God. When we're using our "riches" only for selfish pursuits, things can go very badly.
Father, teach us to rely on you for everything. Help us to be good stewards of all that You have given us, that we may use all we have to further the Kingdom of God. Amen.
