Called to be Holy

Posted on

In the second reading today, we read the introduction of St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. He writes “to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.

Called to be holy. As Christians, that is our call. I dare say that sometimes we lose sight of that call. We may be called to be many things. A good parent. A good spouse. A good employer/employee/provider…the list goes on. But the overarching call in our lives is to holiness. Think about this…when we answer that call to be holy, all of the other callings in our lives will fall into place.

As we draw closer to God, as we grow in holiness, we will automatically become better spouses, parents, children, workers, etc. Holiness can be a scary prospect. It always seems so far away. And yet others seem to be so much closer to it than we. But to paraphrase Thomas Merton, I believe that the desire to grow in holiness is the biggest step to growing in holiness. Who knows…maybe it’s not quite as far off as we may think.

Father, you have called us to be holy. Help us to answer that call daily through prayer and good works. Help us to grow closer to you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
