By Their Fruits

Posted on

A beautiful story today from 2 Kings. The book of the law is found in the temple of the Lord, and is taken to the king. He assembles the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem, and takes all the people up to the temple where the book of the law is read aloud to them. He then revives the terms of the covenant that are written in the book.

In our Gospel reading from Matthew 7, Jesus talks about bearing fruit. “A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a rotten tree bear good fruit…So by their fruits you will know them.” Of course, Jesus is talking about the fruits that people bear.

Many folks think that they can fool the whole world. While they may appear all good, underneath the appearance is a rotten tree. And though they may be able to pull the wool over people’s eyes for a time, eventually the truth will come to light. And it will come through their fruits. Of course, that tree is our heart. If our hearts are not true, pure, seeking God’s will, then our fruit will not be good.

Father, give us humble, holy, true and pure hearts today. May we bear good fruit, that you may be glorified. Amen.
