In the second reading today from 1 Corinthians 1, St. Paul says, “Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord.” In other words, be poor in spirit. Our Gospel reading today is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5. We know them as the Beatitudes.
Have you ever read the Beatitudes in relation to yourself? Ever look at the nine sayings and see if any of them are representative of you? Give it a try. Are you “poor in spirit?” Do you mourn? Are you meek? Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness? Go ahead and go through the nine. It’s an interesting exercise. You may see yourself in some of them. Certainly at some point in life, we all qualify for at least one, right? And don’t try to find reasons why you’re NOT in one of the categories.
Here’s the purpose of this exercise…to see that YOU ARE BLESSED! How about if we spend some time today counting those blessings?
Father, thank you for blessing us in so many ways. May we pass those blessings on to others today. Amen.
