In our first reading today from Isaiah 26, we see about our profession as Christians a belief in the resurrection of the body. Centuries before Jesus came, the LORD said through the prophet, "But your dead shall live, their corpses shall rise."
We could parse every word of today's Gospel reading from Matthew 11. (And, over the years, I think I have.) Today I want to focus on one particular phrase. Jesus said, "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart." Jesus tells us to learn from him.
Now, this may seem like a no-brainer, but stick with me. Are you teachable? I'm sure most everyone would say yes to that. But are there areas of your life where you feel pretty much like you've got all the answers? Certainly that's not something we would like to admit to. But don't we often act that way? Whether it's our sexuality, our finances, our religious practices or anything else. We can be very set in our ways and don't feel like Jesus needs to teach us anything. I find that as I get older, this can sometimes be the case. Let's make sure that we're always teachable and open to the idea that we may actually be wrong about some things.
Father, help us to be open to learning from Jesus, even when we think we've got it all down. May we be always teachable. Amen.
