In today’s first reading from Hebrews 11, the sacred author talks about some of the great figures of the Old Testament. They did not live to see the promise of God fulfilled. But you and I? We are very blessed indeed. We have Christ Jesus available to us always.
In our Gospel reading from Mark 5, Jesus has an encounter with a man possessed by many demons. In fact, when Jesus asks the demon his name, he replies, “Legion is my name. There are many of us.” Jesus casts all of the demons into a herd of swine, and the man was healed. The man then wanted to follow Jesus. Read what Jesus’ instructions were to him.
Have you ever spoken of battling demons? We all have to do that – some more than others, perhaps. Much like the poor guy in today’s Gospel story, I, too, have many demons. They have names, too. Anger, pride, envy, lust, gluttony…the list goes on. We have to do battle every day. The good news is, with Jesus at our side, victory is at hand.
Father, give us the strength to battle our demons, always with Christ Jesus at our side. Amen.
