Today's first reading from the Book of the Prophet Joel sounds very Lenten. In fact, part of this reading pops up in Lent. "Proclaim a fast, call an assembly...cry to the LORD!"
In the Gospel reading from Luke 11, Jesus is accused of driving out demons by the power of Beelzebul. He then talks about how a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. His remarks include this: "When a strong man fully armed guards his palace, his possessions are safe."
Are you fully armed? Of course, I'm not talking about guns and knives and earthly weapons here. I'm talking about spiritual weapons. Prayer, fasting, almsgiving. Scripture, the Rosary, Holy Mass. Read about the armor of God in Ephesians 6. If you are not fully armed with these spiritual weapons, then you're easy prey for Satan. Guard yourself, guard your family, guard your home, guard the Kingdom! We must be armed guards! Arm yourself for battle today!!
Father, may we make use of all the spiritual weapons at our disposal. Help us to be bold, courageous, and fully armed for battle. Amen.
