Another Year, Another Chance

Happy New Year!

Today is the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. It is a holy day of obligation. If you're like me, you probably saw midnight come and go looking at the back of your eyelids. If you didn't make a vigil Mass yesterday, get to Mass!

I've always been pretty good at making New Year's resolutions. Not necessarily keeping them, mind you. And for many years I've made a Scriptural New Year's resolution. For this year it is Colossians 3:15. "Let the peace of Christ control your heart, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful."

There's something about New Year's Day. I know it's just like any other day, but I always feel like it's a great time to make a fresh start. Set some new goals, break them into smaller goals and get started. It's a time for a new beginning, another chance. When you think about it in terms of our relationship with God, every day is like New Year's Day. Why not make today a fresh start?

Father, thank you for being a God of second chances. May we make a fresh start today to draw closer to you, through your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
