In the first reading today, we meet Gideon. Be honest now…you thought he was just a guy who dropped Bibles off in hotel rooms, right? Actually, Gideon is one of the mightiest warrior/champions in all of Scripture. Today Gideon meets up with the angel of the Lord. He asks for a sign, and recieves one. The Lord promises Gideon that he will be victorious against Midian.
Our Gospel reading today is from Matthew 19. It is a continuation of what we read yesterday about Jesus’ encounter with the rich young man. Today we hear those famous words of Jesus, “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of heaven.” Now, a camel could never pass through the eye of a needle. So does this mean it is impossible for someone who has a lot of money and possessions to get to heaven? We must read on to get the full context and the answer.
“For men, this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” Ah…there’s the catch. A human on their own cannot enter the Kingdom. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. But with the help of God, anyone may enter! As far as the riches part goes, if God is guiding one with great riches, then those riches will be used as a tool to help further the Kingdom of God. So, here’s the equation: Without God = Fuggedaboutit! With God = All things are possible!
Father, teach us to rely on you for everything. Help us to be good stewards of all that You have given us, that we may use all we have to further the Kingdom of God. Amen.
