Accomplishing the Works of God

Posted on

Today in Acts 6, we begin reading about St. Stephen. This was a very bold guy who was about to find himself in some real trouble. But even in the face of adversity, St. Stephen’s face “was like the face of an angel.” Tomorrow we will read about the martyrdom of this bold and holy man. For the Gospel reading, we continue in John 6. Some of the people who had been fed by Jesus came looking for him.

After Jesus tells to people to "work for the food that endures for eternal life," the people ask Him, "What can we do to accomplish the works of God?" If you were to ask Jesus that question, what do you think His answer would be?

I think a lot of folks might think Jesus would tell them to feed the poor or follow the commandments. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy may come to mind. So, what did Jesus answer the people? "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent." All of those other things are important, but they all start with faith in Christ. Everything else flows from that.

Father, increase our faith, since believing in Him is accomplishing your work. Amen.
