In today’s Gospel reading from Matthew 5, Jesus talks about how we are to no longer live under the old law of “an eye for an eye.” He is talking about retaliation and retribution. It is in our nature to want those who have harmed us to suffer. It reminds me of the old saying, “We want justice for everyone else and mercy for ourselves.” It is time for us to start living out the law of mercy.
In the first reading from 2 Corinthians 6, St. Paul quotes Isaiah 49: “In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.” St. Paul writes, “Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” Truer words were never spoken.
Can you remember times of big change in your life? Getting married? Having your first child? Changing careers? Buying your first house? I remember thinking at all of these times: Wow…I’m not ready for this. Many people use this same justification for not giving their lives over to God. Oh, I know I need to…I’m just not ready right now. You know, with many things, if we waited until we were “ready,” we would never do them in the first place. Make sure this doesn’t happen with your conversion. Remember, now is a very acceptable time!
Father, give us the grace to turn our lives over to you. Today. Amen.
