A Ridiculous Request?

Posted on

Our salvation has a name. That name is Jesus. In today’s first reading from Acts 4, St. Peter makes that message very clear to the authorities who were questioning him. “There is no salvation through anyone else, nor is there any other name under heaven given to the human race by which we are to be saved.” Amen!

In the Gospel reading today from John 21, we read about Jesus appearing to Simon Peter and six of the other disciples. Peter and company decided to go fishing. Remember, they were professional fisherman. After having caught nothing all night, Jesus appears on the shore and tells them to “cast the net over the right side of the boat and you will find something.” Can you imagine? They were fishing on the wrong side of the boat! I imagine that may have sounded ridiculous to these pros. But they did as Jesus said and caught so many fish that their nets were almost tearing.

Sometimes God asks us to do things that may seem ridiculous to us. It may be like times when the Holy Spirit prompts us to say something completely out of character for us, or talk with a total stranger. Maybe we’re called to give more than we think we can afford to a charitable cause. I think it’s important for us to always remember that God knows what He’s doing. And when we follow His will, even though it may seem absurd, it will always turn out for the best.

Father, help us to always follow your instructions, even (especially) when they seem ridiculous to us. May we always do your will, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
