A Lasting Legacy

Posted on

In today's first reading from Isaiah 11, we hear a name that pops up every year during Advent and approaching Christmas: Jesse. We see it at the beginning and end of today's reading.

"On that day, a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom...On that day, the root of Jesse, set up as a signal for the nations, the Gentiles shall seek out, for his dwelling shall be glorious."

Who was Jesse? He was the father of King David. When I read these passages, it makes me wonder. Did Jesse have any idea about the legacy that he would leave behind? That his name would be remembered forever? As a father, I pray that I will be able to leave a lasting legacy by passing along the faith to all those I encounter. Honestly, you and I will probably not be remembered forever. But our legacy can indeed last into eternity. What are you doing about your legacy today?

Father, help us to build and leave a lasting legacy, one that bears fruit through the generations. Amen.
