A Holy Family

Posted on

Today we celebrate the Feast of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus. In previous years it was the Feast of St. Martha, but now the whole family is celebrated. Martha, Mary and Lazarus were siblings who lived in Bethany.

There are a number of different stories of Jesus and this family. There's the story of Martha and Mary from Luke 10 and the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead in John 11. Finally, the story of Jesus having dinner with this family in John 12.

Jesus loved this family. He wept over Lazarus' death. Mary anointed the feet of Jesus. And Martha echoed the great profession of Peter when she said, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world." This was, indeed, a holy family. We should all be striving to make our families a holy family. For just as Jesus loved this family, He loves yours, too.

Father, help us to make our families a holy family, to love and imitate Christ. Amen.
