In today's first reading from Amos 8, the prophet foretells of a famine. "Not a famine of bread, or thirst for water, but for hearing the word of the LORD."
The prophesy came to pass as there were many generations between the last prophet and the coming of Jesus. Can this prophesy still ring true today? I think so. Let me explain.
Many people choose to experience the famine for hearing the Word. In my own life, I had a famine for more than ten years. This type of famine is not caused by, or approved by God. It is completely self-imposed. And it is even more devastating than any natural famine. God's Word is abundantly available to all. There is no need to experience this kind of famine. If you're in the midst of one, pray for God's grace to rain down on you today.
Father, may we always be open to the abundant graces of your Word. Amen.
