Jesus’ Words
November 15th, 2009 Posted in :60 ReflectionsIn today’s Gospel reading from Mark 13, Jesus talks about the end times. On the surface, it sounds like pretty scary stuff. “In those days after that tribulation the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.” Not a pleasant thought. But, if we are ready, it will end well for us!
In talking about the end of time, Jesus says this, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Of course we know that this remains true even to today, nearly 2000 years later. And it will, of course, remain true until the end of time. But can you sometimes see signs where Jesus’ words have “passed away?” Perhaps a different way of thinking of that would be say “have become passe.” I see it. In fact, I sometimes even see it in my own life. This is not a good thing.
I’m sure you’ve heard the term “Cafeteria Catholic” or “Cafeteria Christian.” This happens when we pick and choose the things we want to believe; the things that suit our way of thinking. In essence, when we engage in this, we find that some of Jesus’ words have become passe; have passed away. How tragic. I’m a firm believer that, when it comes to faith, you’re either all in, or you’re not in at all.
Father, forgive us for those times when we pick and choose what we want to believe. Give us the grace to assent to the fullness of truth as found in the teachings of the Church. Amen.

Science reinforces the fact that through entropy the earth will pass away, so it is a great thrill to know that Jesus has eternal life to give to believers in Him. Praise the Lord for the light of Jesus.
