Your Foundation

June 28th, 2012 Posted in :60 Reflections

Today in 2 Kings 24, we see the story of the Babylonian exile. Israel had yet another wicked king, and the time had come for them to pay the price for their sinfulness. In the Gospel today, Jesus finishes the Sermon on the Mount. When He was done, “the crowds were astonished at his teaching.” I hope that we still are to this day!

Today Jesus teaches about acting on his words. He likens those who do not act on His words to someone who builds a house on sand. You don’t need to be a construction expert to know that this is not a very solid foundation. On the other hand, those who hear Jesus’ words and act on them are like someone who builds his house on rock. Solid. For the long haul.

We all know that Jesus is speaking of spiritual matters. So today, I thought we could have a little construction discussion. Let’s look at some common foundation materials and what they equate to: wealth = sand, possessions = sand, power = sand, fame = sand, anything but Christ = sand. Pretty simple equations, huh? So, on what foundation is your house built? I guess when the wind and rains come, we’ll find out, won’t we?

Father, we thank you for the rock that is the Word of Christ. Give us the grace and vision to build our houses on Him. Amen.

I always thought the crowds were astonished at Christ’s teachings because they thought he was just a “hick” from Nazareth (Can any good thing come from Nazareth? Nathaniel asked)
