Dr. Matthew Bunson of EWTN calls in to talk about some news of Catholic interest, including World Youth Day 2023, which opens next Wednesday in Lisbon, Portugal. They also talk about some controversial comments made by Bishop Americo Aguiar, auxiliary bishop of Lisbon and president of the Lisbon WYD Foundation, recently. In a July 6th interview with ACI Digital, he made the statement, "We don't want to convert the young people to Christ or the Catholic Church or anything like that." Those comments were almost immediately clarified as not seeking any aggressive proselytism by Catholics. They also talk about the update on the FBI's Richmond's field office's memo encouraging the targeting of "traditionalist Catholics" and the story about financial improprieties at the Vatican.
Afterwards, Gus talks about the aftermath of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which is heating up even more. Many states are setting up Constitutional amendment referendums that will be on the ballot this November and are seeking to either enshrine or limit access to abortion, including New York, Delaware and Ohio.
Also, Gus recounts his experience yesterday with his 10-year-old grandson Beckett. He remarks about how amazed he was that Beckett, who'd never been in front of a microphone before, really took to it like a fish to water. Gus talks about how he was always drawn to broadcasting, as was his oldest son Patrick who spent many years as a reporter and news anchor in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He invites listeners who have a family talent that's been passed down from generation to generation to call in and share it.
